How We Analyze Games
At Basketball Analytics Collective, we combine traditional basketball analysis with advanced statistical modeling to generate our game predictions and League Pass ratings.
Our Process
1. Data Collection
We gather comprehensive data from multiple sources:
- Official NBA Stats: Box scores, advanced metrics, play-by-play data
- Betting Markets: Odds from multiple sportsbooks
- Injury Reports: Official team injury designations
- Schedule Data: Rest days, travel patterns, back-to-backs
2. Statistical Analysis
We analyze each matchup using key metrics such as:
Offensive Rating (ORtg)
Defensive Rating (DRtg)
Pace: Possessions per 48 minutes. Indicates game tempo.
Team Quality Score (SRS): A proprietary relative team rating score
True Shooting % (TS%): Shooting efficiency accounting for 2-pointers, 3-pointers, and free throws.
3. Situational Analysis
We consider critical situational factors:
- Rest advantage (days between games)
- Home court advantage
- Recent momentum (last 5 games)
- Injury impact
- Coaching matchups
- Historical head-to-head results
5. Viewing Value
Our Viewing Value indicates how competitive and entertaining a game should be:
10/10 – Must Watch
9/10 – Premium
8/10 – Quality
7/10 – Solid
6/10 – Average
5/10 – Below Average
1-4/10 – Skip
Limitations & Transparency
We acknowledge:
- No model is perfect. Basketball has inherent randomness.
- Injuries and lineup changes can dramatically affect outcomes.
- Variance means short-term results may not reflect long-term accuracy.
Our methods are continuously refined based on results and new research.
